The Director of Technology must be able to manage at multiple levels of detail so presentation of information can be customized to the audience. This post represents the highest level of detail. The Technology Strategy should present information related to the direction of the infrastructure and software elements for up to 36 months.  The assumption here is to present this information anually.  The direction will change and needs to be sensitive to the business requirements and funding available.

Current Technology Strategy can be divided up into 12 month increments.  For each of the increments, the ‘End State’ can be described which is the state of the infrastructure and software at the end of the 12 month period.   This description can be divided into blocks of information for ease of consumption by the audience.

The first block of the strategy should indicate what is anticipated to be on premise (in the server room) at the end of the period.  What applications and hardware will be located in the business server room when this period is complete.  Any server room hardware and software that is to be added or retired should be noted.  In the past, I have done this with colouring so the consumer can easily identify these elements.  Start with what is in the server room today.  Then, colour the elements to indicate they are ‘retired’, ‘planned’ or ‘in progress’.  Keep the ‘End State’ in mind when shading the elements.  Will this element be ‘in progress’ at the end of the period?  Then it should be a particular colour.

The second block of the strategy should indicate what is anticipated to be off-premise.  This  would indicate infrastructure that would be moved off-premise over the course of the period.   There is a case to be made in other articles that Technology Directors and Managers should be looking to move elements of the business off premise to reduce capital investment.  This is not the article to discuss this,  but moving hardware and software off premise actually will keep your business up to speed with the changes in the Technology Industry.  More to come on this.  Just make sure you are telling your executives you are moving infrastructure and software off-premise where it makes sense.  Keep in mind the previous paragraph, colouring the elements appropriately as they will be at the end of the period.   This gives the consumer a quick guide to your thinking at the end of a particular period.

Within these blocks you can demonstrate the end state using flowchart blocks or line items.  The idea here is to demonstrate that you will be adding elements, changing elements and retiring elements of the overall technology over the course of the period.
